Dr. McArthur Newell was born December 29, 1942, in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He attended Georgetown High School in Jacksonville where he was president of the student government and a member of the Crown and Scepter Honor Society. He was valedictorian of the class of 1961 and earned a scholarship to North Carolina A&T State University to further his education. At N.C. A&T, he received a Bachelor of Science and a graduate degree. In pursuing his desire to help others, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, where he earned a medical doctorate degree. Dr. Newell completed his residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.
Returning his family to North Carolina, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Greensboro, North Carolina, for 25 years. Prior to his death, he was delivering second generations. Dr. Newell's memberships included Shiloh Baptist Church, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Greensboro Men's Club, Greensboro Medical Society, North Carolina Medical and National Medical Associations, and the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He was a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of North Carolina A&T State University. In addition, he served on numerous other boards.
